why teakettles and toasters shout?

In “Java Concurrency in Practice”, the authors introduce the asynchronous programming concept saying : “The manufacturers of teakettles and toasters know their products are often used in an asynchronous manner, so they raise an audible signal when they complete their task.”

This however stuck me as an good user-interface example.
